There are certain things that being Canadian means; one of these things is that we have to brave bitterly cold temperatures in the winter. What better of a way to brave one of these days is one of my favourite drinks – Hot Chocolate! My favourite? Peppermint hot chocolate!
I’ve tried many kinds of hot chocolate. I find when I go through the drive thru to grab myself a hot chocolate on the go, it is always super salty. And realistically when it is super cold out, do you really want to go out, shovel out your car and drive to get yourself a drink? I really don’t! I want to stay bundled up home in front of the fireplace with my slipper boots and cozy sweater.
This sparked my interest in making my own hot chocolate for the wintery season, not only this time, but in the other months of the year as well. Below you will find my take on regular hot chocolate, white hot chocolate and peppermint hot chocolate!
Hot chocolate is surprisingly super easy to make on your own. You’ll just need a few key ingredients to make your own at home. Prepare yourself by purchasing milk (I use 2%), heavy cream (18% is what I use), peppermint candies (I have a huge peppermint candy cane I’ve been using) and your choice of chocolate. If you want regular hot chocolate choose milk chocolate. If you want white hot chocolate, choose your favourite white chocolate, and I am drinking a peppermint dark hot chocolate on this cold snowy day so I’m using a piece of dark chocolate I purchased from Bulk Barn. I will break down the ingredients and directions below!
– 1/4 cup heavy cream
– 1/2 cup milk
– 4 Peppermint candies, crushed
– 4 ounces chocolate, chopped
I prefer to make mine stove top as I find it is less messy than the microwave.
1. Start by mixing together your cream, milk and peppermint candies in a sauce pan over medium heat for approximately 5 minutes. Your candies should be dissolved in this time.
2. Add your choice of chocolate and stir until it has been completely dissolved. Continue to mix for another minute or two or until yours looks ready to drink!
3. Serve and enjoy!
Super simple to make and delicious! If you would prefer not to use the peppermint candies just remove that ingredient and continue with the recipe.
